How long is measurement data stored?

Learn how long Emporia Energy stores your smart home measurement data in the cloud, from detailed to lifetime trends.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

At Emporia Energy, we store and manage your smart home energy measurement data in the cloud, ensuring accessibility and reliability. Below is the data retention policy for device measurements:

  • 1-second interval data: Retained for 3 hours.

  • 1-minute interval data: Retained for 7 days.

  • 15-minute interval data: Retained for 1 year (available only via data export).

  • 1-hour, daily, and aggregated data: Stored for the lifetime of the device.

These retention policies help strike a balance between detailed data availability and storage efficiency, while ensuring that long-term trends and usage remain accessible.

What about local data?

Emporia devices are designed to be cloud-based, so their local data retention is pretty limited. See Offline Behavior for more details on how it works in offline situations when not connected to the Emporia cloud. There is no provision for recovering minute-level data from local storage after it has been overwritten in the cloud.

How to export data?

You're able to export your data via CSV format on-demand from within the Emporia Energy app. At this moment we do not have an official programmatic API available for cloud data. To ensure long-term access to 1-minute interval data, it is recommended to export data on a weekly basis. Use the CSV export tool in the Emporia Energy app to generate weekly datasets, which can be aggregated for trends analysis.

Best Practices for Long-Term Data Retention

  • Regularly export 1-minute interval data as CSV files to safeguard high-resolution data.

  • Consolidate weekly exports to build comprehensive datasets.

  • Be aware that data older than 7 days will be stored only in aggregated formats like 15-minute intervals.
