Incorrect Solar Net Metering

How to check/update your device for accurate net metering with bidirectional current direction.

Updated over a week ago

If your Vue 3 energy monitor (or Vue 2, Vue 1) is not accurately tracking solar/net metering, the issue typically stems from one of the following three scenarios:

1. Device Not Flagged for Net Metering

If "I don't have Solar/generation" was selected during the initial setup or if you do not see "Net Usage" or "Net Production" at the top of your device's circuit list, the Vue energy monitor is not correctly set to track solar/net metering. To resolve this follow the Re-Calibration Reset process outlined below. Once completed, you should see Net Production or Net Usage at the top of your device's circuit list and transitioning appropriately between both states dependent on your generation and consumption patterns within the system.

2. Incorrect Placement of 200A CTs

Ensure that the 200A CTs on the Gen 2/Gen 1 device are placed on the main lines between the incoming grid power and the solar input. This setup allows the device to detect grid-supplied power from one direction and backfed solar power from the other direction.

This issue is common in setups where solar lines are connected directly to the mains or higher upstream than the panel where the Gen 2 is installed. If you are unsure about your setup, please take photos of the installation and send them to the Customer Support team for further assistance.

3. Incorrect Device Calibration

If the sensors are correctly positioned and you still experience issues, your device might need a re-calibration reset to appropriately lock the mains 200A CT's to the proper phase voltage. Follow the steps below to run the Re-Calibration Reset outlined below. The Vue energy monitor will then show excess generation as green (negative) numbers and bars on the graphs, and load will display as blue (positive) numbers and bars.

If this re-calibration does not resolve the issue, please contact Customer Support for further assistance.

Re-Calibration Reset Process

Note: During this reset process, its important to turn off any solar power or generation sources within your electrical system. Whenever the Vue energy monitor is being setup or reset in this way - it assumes all power it can "see" is coming "from the grid" only. Having any solar/generation occurring during the reset process will cause accuracy issues. We generally recommend running > 1kW per live phase in your system, but running as much consumption as possible will help the device calibrate itself more correctly.

  1. Ensure you are near the device.

  2. Open the Emporia Energy app.

  3. Select Menu (☰), then Manage Devices.

  4. Select the Vue energy monitor you want to reset.

  5. Scroll to the bottom and select Reset WiFi / Solar Setup.

  6. Follow prompts in the app, ensuring you select I have Solar/Generation when prompted.
