The Vue Utility Connect requires your utility provider to support a Home Area Network (HAN) on their smart meters, plus an active registration process for customers to authorize the device. This article lists the utilities currently supported and what to do if yours isn't listed.
Currently Supported Utilities
As of this article's last update, the following utilities support the Vue Utility Connect:
PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) — California
SCE (Southern California Edison) — California
First Energy — Ohio (Ohio Edison and other Ohio operating companies)
First Energy — Pennsylvania (Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power, West Penn Power)
PPL — Pennsylvania
Duquesne Light — Pennsylvania
Burlington Electric — Vermont
GMP (Green Mountain Power) — Vermont
ComEd (Commonwealth Edison) — Illinois
For the most current list, including any utilities added or changes to the registration process, check emporiaenergy.com/utilities.
How to Tell If Your Smart Meter Is Compatible
Even if your utility is on the list above, your specific smart meter may need to have its HAN feature enabled. Two things to check:
Is your meter a smart meter? If your utility installs digital meters that report usage automatically (no meter reader visits), you have a smart meter. Older mechanical-dial meters do not work with the Utility Connect.
Does it broadcast over Zigbee? Most smart meters in the supported utility regions do, but a small percentage have it disabled. The registration process with your utility (covered in Setting Up Your Vue Utility Connect) will confirm this — if your utility activates the HAN broadcast on request, you're good to go.
What If My Utility Isn't Listed?
If your utility isn't on the supported list, the Utility Connect won't work for you today. Two paths forward:
Consider a Vue with CT sensors instead. A Vue installed in your electrical panel works regardless of your utility, since it measures usage at the panel directly. See Utility Connect vs. Vue with CTs: Which Should I Choose?
Check back periodically. Emporia adds new utilities as their HAN programs become available. The live utilities list is the most current source.
Setting Up After You Confirm Compatibility
Once you've verified your utility supports the Utility Connect, the next step is registration and setup. See Setting Up Your Vue Utility Connect for the registration steps for each supported utility.
