The Vue Utility Connect is a small device that plugs into a standard wall outlet and wirelessly reads energy data from your utility's smart meter. Unlike the Vue Gen 3 (which installs in your electrical panel and uses CT sensors), the Utility Connect doesn't require any panel work — it pulls whole-home usage data directly from the meter, then sends it to the Emporia Energy app over your home Wi-Fi.
How It Communicates with Your Smart Meter
Your utility's smart meter broadcasts energy usage data over a short-range wireless protocol called Zigbee Smart Energy Profile (SEP). The Utility Connect joins this Home Area Network (HAN) and listens for the meter's broadcasts. This requires:
A smart meter with the HAN/Zigbee feature enabled (sometimes called an "Advanced Metering Infrastructure" or AMI meter).
Your utility company's participation in a HAN program. Many utilities support it but some don't, and registration usually requires authenticating your account with the utility.
The Utility Connect to be within Zigbee range of the meter (typically inside the same building, within ~30 feet through walls).
For a list of supported utilities and the registration process for each, see Markets and Supported Utilities.
What Data You'll See in the App
The Utility Connect reports whole-home energy data — the total kWh your house is using at any given time. The smart meter sends a new reading roughly every 30 seconds, so what you see in the app reflects your usage in near-real time, with a small lag.
Unlike a Vue with CT sensors, the Utility Connect does not show branch circuit values. There are no CT sensors involved, so individual circuits (your dryer, EV charger, HVAC, etc.) are not separately measured. You see the whole-home total, but not the breakdown.
Power and Connectivity
The Utility Connect is powered through a USB cable connected to a standard 120V wall outlet. There's no wiring, no panel access, and no electrician required.
For internet connectivity, the device connects to your home Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz). Once paired through the Emporia Energy app during setup, it stays connected and uploads readings to the Emporia cloud automatically.
Where to Place the Device
The Utility Connect needs to be in two places at once, in a sense: close enough to your smart meter for Zigbee reception, and within range of your Wi-Fi router for cloud reporting. In most homes both can happen from the same wall outlet, but in larger homes you may need to choose a location that balances both.
Smart meters are typically located on the exterior wall of your home — pick an interior outlet on or near that wall.
Avoid placing the device inside metal enclosures, behind large appliances, or in basements/closets that block wireless signals.
If the LED indicates the device can't reach the meter, see Vue Utility Connect Lost Connection to Smart Meter.
