Vue Utility Connect vs. Vue with CTs: Which Should I Choose?

A side-by-side comparison of the two Emporia energy monitoring products to help you pick the right one for your home.

Emporia makes two main home energy monitoring products: the Vue Utility Connect and the Vue Gen 3 (with CT sensors). Both connect to the Emporia Energy app and let you track your home's electricity usage — but they fit different homes and different goals. This article compares them so you can pick the right one.

Quick Comparison

The short version:

  • Vue Utility Connect: Plug it into a wall outlet, pair with your utility's smart meter, see whole-home energy usage. Best for renters, simple setups, or anyone who only needs whole-home data.

  • Vue Gen 3 (with CT sensors): Installs in your electrical panel with CT sensors clamped on individual circuits. Shows you both whole-home usage and per-circuit breakdowns. Best for homeowners, deep-dive energy analysis, or load management.

Pick the Utility Connect If…

  • You rent your home and can't modify the panel.

  • Your panel is full or you don't want to add CTs.

  • Your utility is on the supported utilities list.

  • You only need whole-home usage data — no circuit-level breakdown.

  • You want the fastest possible setup.

Pick the Vue Gen 3 (with CTs) If…

  • You want to see exactly how much each appliance or circuit uses (HVAC, dryer, EV charger, etc.).

  • You have solar and want detailed generation/net-metering tracking.

  • Your utility doesn't support the HAN program (so the Utility Connect isn't an option).

  • You want near-instant updates (~1 second vs. 30 seconds).

  • You're comfortable with a 1–2 hour panel installation, or willing to hire an electrician.

Can I Use Both?

Yes — some customers use both. A Vue Gen 3 in the panel for detailed circuit data, plus a Utility Connect to compare against the utility meter as a sanity check. Both will appear in the same Emporia Energy app.
