Combined Vues vs. Nesting: Which Feature to Use

A side-by-side decision guide for choosing between Combined Vues and Vue Nesting, plus the Custom Sort feature for ordering the circuit list.

Updated today

If you have more than one Vue installed — or you're planning to add a second — the Emporia app gives you two ways to bring those devices together: Combined Vues and Vue Nesting. Choosing the right one matters: using the wrong feature can cause your usage totals to be double-counted or mis-attributed. This article walks through the decision and covers three of the most common setups.

Quick Decision Guide

Full size preview

Use Combined Vues when:

  • You have two or more 200A panels running in parallel (each fed independently from the meter).

  • You need to monitor more than 16 circuits in a single panel using two Vues.

  • You have multiple independent panels that don't feed each other.

Use Nesting when:

  • You have a main panel and a sub-panel.

  • The sub-panel draws power through a breaker in the main panel.

  • You want to track sub-panel usage separately while preventing double-counting.

What's the Difference?

Vue Nesting is for hierarchical power relationships — one panel's power flows through another. The sub-panel Vue is "nested" under the main panel Vue, and the app understands that the sub-panel's energy is already included in the main panel's mains reading. Nesting prevents the same kilowatt from being counted twice.

Combined Vues is for parallel or independent monitoring — multiple Vues that don't have a hierarchical relationship. The devices are linked into one unified view, with all circuits in a single sortable list and aggregated totals across all devices.

Three Common Scenarios

Main panel + sub-panel → Use Nesting

Your setup: a main panel with a Vue installed, and a sub-panel (also with a Vue) that draws power from a breaker in the main panel. Because the sub-panel's energy is already included in the main panel's mains reading, Nesting tells the app to acknowledge that relationship and avoid double-counting.

Parallel panels → Use Combined Vues

Your setup: two or more 200A panels each fed independently from the meter, with a Vue on each. Because both panels are direct loads on the meter, there's no parent-child relationship — both readings need to be added together to get your true whole-home usage. Combined Vues handles the aggregation.

Single panel with 17+ circuits → Use Combined Vues

Your setup: one large panel with more than 16 circuits to monitor, requiring a second Vue. Install the primary Vue with both 200A mains CTs and up to 16 branch CTs. Install the second Vue with branch CTs only — do not install mains CTs on the second Vue. If both Vues are reading the mains, your whole-panel usage gets counted twice.

Setting Up Combined Vues or Nesting

Once both devices are installed and online in the Emporia Energy app, the linking happens in Manage Devices:

  • For Combined Vues, see Combined Vues for the full setup flow, including device sharing and how to undo a combination.

  • For Nesting, see Vue Nesting for main/sub-panel pairing and multi-panel hierarchies.

For the hardware install side — where each Vue goes and which sensors to use — see Monitoring More Than 16 Circuits.

Custom Sort: Ordering the Circuit List

By default, branch circuits are sorted by usage with the highest consumers at the top. With multiple Vues combined into one view, the circuit list can get long — you may want to put your most-watched circuits where you can find them. Custom Sort lets you set the order manually:

  1. Open the Emporia Energy app and tap the Menu (☰).

  2. Select Manage Devices and select your Vue.

  3. Toggle Custom sort circuits on. A reorder handle (𝌆) appears next to each circuit.

  4. Tap and hold the handle on a circuit to lift it, then drag it to its new position.

You must move at least one circuit for the custom order to stick. If you toggle Custom Sort on but don't actually rearrange anything, the app reverts to sorting by usage.

Note — you can't delete a circuit. All 16 ports always appear in settings menus, but only ports with sensors connected show up on the Home screen. To hide a circuit from the Home screen list, unplug its sensor from the Vue.

Key Takeaways

  • Nesting = hierarchical (main → sub-panel).

  • Combined Vues = parallel or independent.

  • Using the wrong feature leads to double-counting and inaccurate totals.

  • When multiple Vues are in the same panel, only the primary Vue should have 200A mains CTs.

  • If you're not sure how your panels are wired, consult a licensed electrician.
