Monitoring More Than 16 Circuits

When to use Combined Vues vs. Vue Nesting for expanding monitoring beyond 16 circuits, plus install patterns for each scenario.

Updated today

Each Vue energy monitor supports up to 16 branch circuit sensors and up to 3 main line sensors. If your panel has more than 16 circuits you want to monitor, or if you need to monitor both a main panel and a sub-panel, there are two features in the Emporia app that support this — and choosing the right one matters.

Your Two Options

Combined Vues — use this when you have two Vue devices installed in the same panel monitoring independent circuits side by side. Both devices contribute their circuit readings to a single unified view in the app. This is the right feature for expanding coverage within one panel.

Vue Nesting — use this when you have a main panel and a sub-panel, and you want the app to understand the hierarchical relationship between them. The sub-panel device is "nested" under the main panel device, allowing the app to correctly attribute sub-panel consumption and avoid counting that load twice.

Using the wrong feature will result in double-counted usage and incorrect totals. If you are not sure which one applies to your setup, see the Combined Vues vs. Nesting: Which Feature to Use decision guide in the App section of the Help Center.

Installation Overview

For both scenarios, the process follows the same pattern: install each Vue device according to the standard installation guide, get both devices online, then use the app to link them together.

Expanding within one panel (Combined Vues): Install the first Vue device with both 200A and 50A sensors as normal. Install the second Vue device in the same panel with only 50A sensors — the second device does not need 200A sensors connected since the first device is already monitoring the mains. Once both are online, use the app to combine them.

Main panel and sub-panel (Nesting): Install one Vue in the main panel and one Vue in the sub-panel, each with their own 200A sensors on the respective mains. Once both are online, use the app to nest the sub-panel device under the main panel device.
