What is the Vue Utility Connect?

An introduction to the Vue Utility Connect — what it does, who it's for, and how to know if it's right for your home.

The Vue Utility Connect is an Emporia energy monitor that lets you see your home's electricity usage in the Emporia Energy app — without installing anything in your electrical panel. It plugs into a standard 120V wall outlet and reads your usage data wirelessly from your utility's smart meter.

What It Does

The Utility Connect gives you near-real-time insight into your home's whole-home energy usage. Once it's set up, you can:

  • See your current home electricity usage in the Emporia Energy app, updated about every 30 seconds.

  • Track historical usage by day, month, or longer periods.

  • Set energy budgets and goals.

  • Spot patterns — when your usage spikes, when your home is most efficient, and so on.

Who It's For

The Utility Connect is the right choice if any of these apply:

  • You rent and can't modify the electrical panel. Renters don't have to ask permission or hire an electrician.

  • Your panel is full or hard to access. No CT sensors, no harness, no breaker space needed.

  • You want a quick, no-tools install. Plug it in, pair it with the app, register it with your utility, and you're done — typically in under 30 minutes.

  • You only need whole-home usage data. If you don't need to break out individual circuits, this is the simpler option.

What It Doesn't Do

The Utility Connect doesn't have CT sensors, so it can't measure individual circuits. If you want to see exactly how much your dryer, HVAC, or EV charger is using on its own, you'll need a Vue (with CTs) installed in your electrical panel. See Utility Connect vs. Vue with CTs: Which Should I Choose? to compare the two products in detail.

Will It Work in My Home?

The Utility Connect works only with smart meters that broadcast over Zigbee Smart Energy Profile, on networks operated by participating utility providers. To check whether your utility is supported, see Markets and Supported Utilities.
