Not Powering On

Resolve power issues by checking connections and power supply.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If your Emporia EV Charger isn't powering on after proper installation, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue. This guide will walk you through some troubleshooting steps to help you determine the cause and get your EV Charger operational.

1. Check Breaker Status

Ensure the Breaker is ON: First, verify that the breaker controlling your EV Charger is in the ON position. If it's not, simply flip it on.

2. Verify the Power Supply

To ensure the power supply is functioning as expected, verify the following:

  • Voltage Between Lines: Measure the voltage between Line 1 (L1) and Line 2 (L2). It should be approximately 240V (or 208V in certain installations).

  • Voltage to Ground: Measure the voltage between both L1 and L2 to ground. Each should be approximately 120V.

  • Ground Line: Confirm that a proper ground line (not a neutral wire) is connected.

  • Wire Gauge: Ensure the wire gauge is appropriate for the charger installation (6awg). Inadequate wiring can prevent the charger from powering up.

3. Inspect Internal Connections

For hardwired installations, it is important to inspect the internal connections:

  • Turn the Breaker OFF: Before opening the EV Charger, de-energize the system by turning the breaker OFF.

  • Remove the Charger Cover: Carefully remove the cover to inspect the connections.

    • Power Supply Wires: Make sure all power supply wires are securely attached to their respective terminals.

    • Check for Loose Wires: Tug lightly on each wire to confirm it's secure.

    • Verify Wire Positioning: Ensure the wires are terminated correctly above the metal contact inside the terminal, not below.

  • Re-secure Wires: If anything is loose, re-secure or re-terminate as necessary.

4. LED Strip Connection

Confirm that the LED strip is securely connected to both the charger cover and the internal circuit board. If it's loose, reconnect it properly.

5. Confirm Breaker Type

If you're using a GFCI breaker and the breaker is tripping (or not powering on), please see this article for details.

6. Power Verification

  • Turn the Breaker ON Again: Once all connections are verified, turn the breaker back ON and check if the EV Charger powers up. You should see the green LED light illuminate, indicating successful power-up.
