The Emporia Energy app is how you control, configure, and monitor your EV Charger. This article covers adding the charger to your account, navigating the control page, adjusting your charge rate, managing device settings, and setting up charging notifications.
Adding Your EV Charger to the App
After installation, you'll need to add the charger to your Emporia account before you can control it. Make sure you have the Emporia Energy app installed and are logged in before starting.
To add your EV Charger:
Open the Emporia Energy app and tap the Menu (☰)
Tap Add a New Device
Select EV Charger and follow the on-screen setup steps
When prompted, enable Bluetooth on your phone — the app uses Bluetooth to send your Wi-Fi credentials to the charger
Enter your Wi-Fi network name and password when prompted — the charger requires a 2.4GHz network
Once connected, name your charger and complete setup
If the charger doesn't appear during setup or won't connect to Wi-Fi, see EV Charger Wi-Fi & Connectivity Issues.
The Control Page
The control page is your main hub for managing charging. Access it by tapping the charger icon next to your charger's name on the Devices screen or Home screen.
From the control page you can start and stop charging, adjust the real-time charge rate, view current status, and access settings, history, and energy management features.
Charging states:
On — Charger is ready and will begin charging as soon as a vehicle is plugged in
Off — Charger is paused. Plugging in a vehicle will not start a session. Required for energy management features like Excess Solar and PowerSmart to take automatic control
Charging — A vehicle is connected and actively receiving charge
Ready — A vehicle is connected but charging has not started (vehicle may have its own schedule set)
Adjusting Your Charge Rate
There are two charge rate settings in the app. Both are found in the charger's Settings, accessed from the control page.
Maximum Charge Rate (Breaker Size)
This is a permanent ceiling that sets the highest amperage the charger will ever draw. It should be configured once during setup to match your breaker size. Changing this setting requires a PIN set by your installer — contact your electrician or Emporia Support if you need to reset it.
To set the Maximum Charge Rate:
From the control page, tap the Charger Settings tile at the bottom
Tap Breaker and select your breaker size
Enter the installer PIN when prompted
Real-Time Charge Rate
This is an on-demand adjustment you can make anytime to temporarily reduce the charge rate — useful for managing energy costs without changing your permanent settings. It can be set in single-amp increments up to your configured maximum (40A for NEMA plug-in, 48A for hardwired).
To adjust the Real-Time Charge Rate:
From the control page, tap the Charger Settings tile at the bottom
Tap Charge Rate and use the slider to set your desired amperage
EV Charger Settings
Access the full settings page via the control page or through Menu (☰) → Manage Devices → your EV Charger.
Available settings:
Schedule — Set up time-of-use charging schedules or enable Smart Saver to automatically charge during off-peak hours
Breaker — Configure your maximum charge rate (PIN required)
Charge Rate — Adjust real-time charging amperage
Link EV Charger with Alexa — Connect to Amazon Alexa for voice control
LED Troubleshooting Help — Quick reference for fault codes and LED patterns
EV Charger Info displays your device's serial number, firmware version, connection status, and an optional field for your vehicle make. This is also where you can find the firmware version needed for rebate applications.
Get Notified When Your EV Is Done Charging
You can set up a custom alert in the app to notify you when your vehicle stops charging. This works by triggering when the charger's power draw drops below a threshold, signaling that the vehicle has reached its charge limit.
To set up the notification:
Tap the Notifications bell in the app, then tap the settings icon in the top right
Tap + Add Alert
Give the alert a name (e.g., "EV Done Charging")
Under Apply To, select your EV Charger and ensure Mains is selected
Set the condition to Less than or Equal To 0.001 kW with a duration of 1 Minute
Tap Save
The alert fires when power drops below 0.001 kW for one minute and resets automatically once charging resumes. If your vehicle trickle-charges at the end of a session, you may need to adjust the threshold slightly upward.
