Smart Plug LED Behavior

Reference guide for the LED colors and blink patterns on the front of the Emporia Smart Plug, and what to do when the LED signals a problem.

Updated this week

The LED on the front of your Emporia Smart Plug tells you the device's status at a glance — whether it has power, whether it's connected to Wi-Fi, whether the relay is on or off, and which setup mode it's in. Use this reference to match what you see on the plug to what's happening inside.

LED Reference Table

LED Behavior

What It Means

No light

Plug is not receiving power from the outlet

Solid Blue

Relay is ON — appliance is powered, and the plug is connected to Wi-Fi

Solid Purple

Relay is OFF — appliance is not powered, and the plug is connected to Wi-Fi

Slow Red Blink

Plug has lost its Wi-Fi connection

Rapid Blue Blink

In Quick Mode — ready to pair with the Emporia app

Slow Blue Blink

In Hotspot Mode — fallback pairing mode, ready to be connected to directly from your phone

If You See No Light

The plug isn't getting power. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the outlet itself has power by plugging in a lamp or phone charger

  2. If the outlet works, unplug the Smart Plug and plug it into a different outlet to rule out a bad outlet contact

  3. Check the breaker for the circuit you're using — a tripped breaker will cut power to the plug

  4. If the LED stays off in multiple working outlets, the plug may be faulty. Contact our Customer Support team for warranty assistance

If You See a Slow Red Blink

The plug lost its Wi-Fi connection. This is the single most common LED problem customers run into. Most of the time it resolves on its own within a few minutes as the plug retries the connection, but if it doesn't:

  1. Confirm your Wi-Fi router is online and that other devices on your network still have internet

  2. Power cycle the plug — unplug it for about 15 seconds, then plug it back in

  3. If the LED stays red, try a Wi-Fi reset from the Emporia app: Menu (☰)Manage Devices → your Smart Plug → Reset Wi-Fi

If the plug still won't reconnect, see our full Smart Plug Not Connecting to Wi-Fi guide for deeper troubleshooting.

If You See a Rapid or Slow Blue Blink

The plug is in setup mode and waiting to be paired to your Wi-Fi network through the Emporia app. These blink patterns are expected during first-time setup or after a Wi-Fi reset.

  • Rapid Blue Blink (Quick Mode) — Default setup mode. Open the Emporia app, tap Menu (☰)Add a New Device, and follow the setup steps

  • Slow Blue Blink (Hotspot Mode) — Fallback setup mode if Quick Mode fails. The app walks you through connecting directly to the plug's temporary Wi-Fi hotspot

If the plug stays in blink mode and won't complete setup, see Smart Plug Not Connecting to Wi-Fi.

Solid Blue or Solid Purple — Normal Operation

Both solid colors mean the plug is working correctly:

  • Solid Blue — Your appliance is receiving power through the plug, and the plug is connected to Wi-Fi and reporting to the Emporia app

  • Solid Purple — Your appliance is not receiving power. The plug is connected to Wi-Fi, but the relay has been switched off either by you in the app, by a schedule, by the high-load safety cutoff, or by a voice assistant

If you see Solid Purple unexpectedly, check the Emporia app to see whether the plug was switched off manually, by schedule, or by the high-load cutoff (an email notification will confirm a cutoff event).
