Smart Plug Compatibility & Buying Guide

Everything you need to confirm before buying an Emporia Smart Plug — regional models, appliance compatibility, and what the plug can and can't handle.

Updated today

The Emporia Smart Plug gives you real-time energy monitoring and app-based on/off control for individual appliances. Before you buy, there are a few things to confirm — the right regional model for your outlets, whether your appliance fits within the plug's load limits, and where the plug can and can't safely be used.

Choose the Right Regional Model

Emporia Smart Plugs are built for specific regional electrical standards. Buying the wrong model for your region means it won't fit your outlet and won't work safely. Confirm your region before purchasing:

  • North America (120V) — Standard NEMA 5-15 plug. Available on Amazon US, Canada, and shop.emporiaenergy.com.

  • United Kingdom (240V) — Type G (BS 1363) plug. Available on Amazon UK.

  • European Union (240V) — Type F (Schuko CEE 7/4) plug. Available on Amazon DE, FR, IT, NL, PL, and SE.

The EU and UK models launched in April 2023. Both are CE-certified and designed for 240V residential use. The North American model will not work on 240V circuits, and the EU/UK models will not work on 120V North American circuits.

Load Limits by Region

Every Smart Plug has a maximum current rating. Exceed it and the plug will shut itself off for 24 hours as a safety measure. Confirm your appliance's power draw fits within the limit for your model:

  • North American Smart Plug — 15A peak / 10A continuous at ~120V. Continuous use is defined as an hour or longer above 10A.

  • UK Smart Plug — 13A peak / 10A continuous at ~240V.

  • EU Smart Plug — 16A peak / 10A continuous at ~240V.

High-Load Cutoff: If you exceed the amperage limit, the plug shuts itself down for 24 hours and you'll receive an email notification at the address tied to your Emporia account. This is a hard safety limit — the plug is not safe to use on circuits that routinely pull more than its rated peak current.

Common Appliance Compatibility

Most household appliances under 1,800 watts (at 120V) or 2,400 watts (at 240V) are compatible. A few worth calling out:

  • Refrigerators and freezers — Compatible in most cases. A typical household fridge draws well below the 10A continuous limit. Use caution for remote/vacation scenarios: the Smart Plug can be turned off by accident via the app, and if you're not at the property to notice, you could lose food. For critical refrigeration on a property you don't visit often, consider whether the monitoring value is worth that risk.

  • Space heaters and portable A/C units — Check the nameplate. Many draw 12.5A or more at 120V, which exceeds the continuous-use limit. If in doubt, don't plug it in.

  • Lamps, TVs, small appliances, electronics — Well within limits. These are the ideal Smart Plug use cases.

  • Washers, dryers, ovens, EV chargers — Not compatible. These draw well above Smart Plug limits and typically use 240V outlets the plug can't connect to anyway.

Where You Can and Can't Use It

  • Indoor use only — Emporia Smart Plugs are not rated for outdoor use. Do not use them in garages exposed to moisture, on covered patios, or anywhere the plug could be exposed to rain, snow, or humidity.

  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi required — The Smart Plug will not connect to 5.0GHz-only networks. If your home network is 5GHz-only, you'll need to enable a 2.4GHz band on your router before setup.

  • Single-phase only — The North American model works on single-phase 120V circuits. It will not work on 240V split-phase outlets or three-phase industrial circuits.
