Smart Plug Recall (09/2023)

What to do if your Emporia Smart Plug was part of the September 2023 recall — how to verify eligibility, request a replacement or refund, and safely dispose of the recalled unit.

In September 2023, Emporia Energy issued a voluntary recall of certain Smart Plugs due to a grounding issue that could pose a safety risk. This article covers how to check whether your Smart Plug is affected, how to request a replacement or refund, and what to do with the recalled unit.

Is My Smart Plug Affected?

The recall applies to Smart Plugs purchased between July 1, 2022 and August 1, 2023 from Amazon or shop.emporiaenergy.com. If your plug falls outside this window, it is not part of the recall.

If your plug is affected, you'll typically have received a recall notification by email or through an Amazon alert. Full recall details, including batch identifiers, are posted on the Emporia Energy recall page.

If your Smart Plug is recalled, stop using it immediately. The grounding issue is a safety concern — do not continue to use the device even if it appears to be working normally.

Request a Replacement or Refund

Emporia is offering a free replacement or a full refund for every recalled Smart Plug, including plugs purchased through third-party sellers such as eBay. To request one, contact our Customer Support team with the following:

  • Your name, phone number, email, and shipping address

  • Number of affected Smart Plugs in your possession

  • Original order number(s) if available (helpful but not required for orders older than 12 months)

  • Whether you prefer a replacement or refund

Third-party purchases (Amazon, eBay, other resellers): You're still eligible. Emporia's standard warranty doesn't normally cover non-primary sales channels, but an exception is in place for this safety-related recall.

After Your Replacement Arrives

  1. You'll receive a confirmation email with tracking details when your replacement ships

  2. Do not continue using the recalled plug even while waiting for the replacement

  3. Once the replacement arrives, recycle the recalled unit through your local electronics recycling program — do not put it in regular household trash
