Controlling Your Smart Plug in the App

Everything you can do with your Emporia Smart Plug from the app — toggle on/off, set schedules, use Timer Mode, and manage settings.

Updated today

The Emporia Energy app is where you turn your Smart Plug on and off, set schedules, manage settings, and view device info. This article covers everything you can do from the app — from quick on/off control to advanced settings like Wi-Fi reset and removing a plug from your account.

The Control Page

The Control page is your main hub for a Smart Plug. From here you can toggle the plug on or off, see its current status, and get to all its settings.

To open the Control page:

  1. Open the Emporia Energy app and go to the Devices screen

  2. Tap the name of your Smart Plug

The Control page shows the plug's on/off state, current power draw in watts, and buttons for schedules, settings, and energy history.

Turning the Plug On and Off

There are three ways to toggle your Smart Plug:

  • From the Control page — Tap the large power button

  • From the Home screen — Tap the Smart Plug icon next to its name. This is a shortcut that bypasses the Control page and is enabled by the "Control from Home Page" setting (on by default)

  • On the device itself — Press the physical power button on the front of the plug. This works even when the plug is offline

Voice assistants (Google Home and Amazon Alexa) can also toggle the plug — see Voice Assistant Integration for setup.

Setting Up Schedules

You can schedule the Smart Plug to turn on or off at specific times — useful for lamps, space heaters (if within load limits), holiday lights, or any appliance you want running on a regular cycle.

To create a schedule:

  1. From the Control page, tap Schedules

  2. Tap + Add Schedule

  3. Choose the days, times, and whether the plug should turn on or off

  4. You can also use Sun Up or Sun Down triggers based on your location — useful for outdoor-style lighting that should follow sunrise/sunset

  5. Tap Save

Schedules are stored on the Smart Plug itself, so they continue to run even if the plug temporarily loses its Wi-Fi connection. Updating or deleting schedules requires the plug to be online.

Timer Mode (Android Only)

Timer Mode is a countdown feature that automatically toggles the Smart Plug after a set period — handy for running a fan for two hours, charging a device for 30 minutes, or any "turn this off later" use case.

Note: Timer Mode is currently available in the Android app only. iOS support is on the roadmap.

To start a timer:

  1. From the Control page, open Smart Plug Settings (the tile at the bottom)

  2. Tap Timer

  3. Set the duration and whether the plug should turn on or off when the timer ends

  4. Tap Start

The Emporia app needs to be running (foreground or background) for the timer to fire at the right time. If you force-quit the app, the timer won't trigger.

Smart Plug Settings

Access the full settings page from the Control page by tapping Smart Plug Settings (the tile at the bottom), or by going to Menu (☰) → Manage Devices → your Smart Plug.

Available settings:

  • Smart Plug Info — Shows the plug's name, serial number, firmware version, and connection status

  • On / Off Toggle — Quick power control from the settings page

  • Control from Home Page — When enabled, tapping the plug's icon on the Home screen toggles it directly instead of opening the Control page

  • Schedules — Opens the scheduling page (same as the Schedules tile on the Control page)

  • Nest Under — Groups the plug under a parent device in your device list, useful if you have multiple Emporia products

  • Reset Wi-Fi — Clears the plug's Wi-Fi credentials so you can reconnect it to a different network. Use this if you move or change routers

  • Clear Data — Deletes all historical energy data for this plug. This cannot be undone

  • Remove from Account — Unregisters the plug from your Emporia account. Use this before giving the plug away or returning it
