Getting your Emporia Smart Plug set up takes about five minutes. This article walks you through the full process — confirming your Wi-Fi network, plugging the device in, pairing it with the Emporia app, and what to do if setup doesn't go as expected.
Before You Start
A few things to confirm before you begin:
The Emporia Energy app — Install it on your phone or tablet from the App Store or Google Play, and create an Emporia account if you don't already have one
2.4GHz Wi-Fi network — The Smart Plug will not connect to a 5.0GHz-only network. Most home routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same network name, but some require you to enable 2.4GHz manually. If you're unsure, check your router's admin page or contact your internet provider
Your Wi-Fi password — You'll need to enter it during pairing
A compatible outlet — The North American Smart Plug needs a standard 120V outlet (NEMA 5-15). UK and EU models need their respective 240V outlets. Don't use the plug on a circuit that routinely pulls more than 15A
Bluetooth enabled on your phone — The app briefly uses Bluetooth during the initial pairing handshake
Step-by-Step Setup
Plug the Smart Plug into your chosen outlet. The LED will start blinking rapidly blue — this means it's in Quick Mode and ready to pair
Open the Emporia Energy app and tap the Menu (☰) icon
Select Add a New Device
Choose Smart Plug and follow the on-screen prompts
When prompted, enter your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network name and password
Wait for the pairing to complete. The LED should change from blinking blue to solid blue (relay on) or solid purple (relay off) — both mean the plug is connected
Give your Smart Plug a name that identifies what it's monitoring (e.g., "Living Room Lamp" or "Fridge") and tap Save
That's it — your Smart Plug is ready to use.
Quick Mode vs. Hotspot Mode
The Smart Plug supports two pairing methods. The app will try the default method first and fall back to the other if needed:
Quick Mode (default) — The app broadcasts your Wi-Fi credentials to the plug while it's blinking rapidly blue. This is the faster method and works in most home networks
Hotspot Mode (fallback) — If Quick Mode fails, the app will ask you to connect your phone directly to the plug's temporary Wi-Fi hotspot. Once connected, the app sends your home Wi-Fi credentials over that direct link. The plug's LED blinks slowly blue while in Hotspot Mode
The app automatically offers Hotspot Mode if Quick Mode fails, so you don't need to choose manually. If setup stalls, try Hotspot Mode — it has a higher success rate on tricky networks.
If Setup Doesn't Work
A few common issues and quick fixes:
LED isn't blinking when plugged in — Confirm the outlet has power by plugging in another device. If the outlet works but the plug's LED stays off, the plug may be faulty — contact Customer Support
App says "Could not connect to plug" — Close and reopen the app, power cycle the plug (unplug for 15 seconds, then plug back in), and try again. Confirm Bluetooth is on
Wi-Fi pairing fails — Double-check you entered the correct Wi-Fi password, and confirm your network is 2.4GHz (not 5.0GHz-only)
Plug pairs but goes offline later — Likely a Wi-Fi signal strength issue. Move the plug closer to your router, or use a Wi-Fi extender
