Vue Not Connecting to Wi-Fi

The best tips/tricks we've collected from Customer Support to get your Vue connected.

Updated over a week ago

Welcome to the Emporia Energy WiFi connection troubleshooting guide. Whether setting up a new device, switching networks, or experiencing connectivity issues, this guide is here to help. Connectivity problems can be frustrating, but with a few steps, we can tackle them together.

First Things First: Reset and Power Cycle

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, let's start with the basics:

Power Cycle Your Device and Network Equipment:

  • For the Device: Unplug it or turn off its power source for about 30 seconds (can flip breakers), then power it back on. This process is known as power cycling.

  • For the Emporia App: Try force-closing and reopening the app. This refreshes the app's connection attempts. (iOS, Android)

  • For Your Router: Similarly, restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. This can resolve many minor network issues.

  • Verify Password: While it might seem obvious, many customers have found that their password is not what they thought it was. An easy way to validate this is to 'forget' your network on the smart device you are using to connect the Emporia product and immediately log in using the password. This quick and easy step can eliminate hours of frustration if the password you're entering is not the current correct one.

Attempt to Connect Again:

After resetting everything, try connecting your device through the Emporia app once more.

Vue devices are designed to reconnect to WiFi automatically after power or internet outages. However, this reconnection can sometimes take up to an hour. If your device doesn't reconnect automatically, you may need to perform a manual WiFi reset through the app, as described in the section below.

Check Your Signal Strength

Emporia devices require a stable signal more than high speed. Here's how to ensure good signal strength:

  • Positioning: Place your device closer to your WiFi router if possible. This can significantly improve connection quality.

  • For Vue: Gen 3 Devices: Make sure the WiFi antenna is mounted outside the electrical panel to avoid interference from the metal enclosure.

  • WiFi Extenders: If moving closer isn't an option, consider a WiFi extender to boost signal strength near your device.

  • Antenna Extenders: For Vue: Gen 3, an (rp) SMA-Coaxial cable antenna extender can enhance WiFi reception. These are readily available online or in electronics stores.

Try a Mobile Hotspot

Connecting your device to a mobile hotspot can bypass local network issues:

  • Set Up a Hotspot: Use your smartphone to create a WiFi hotspot. (iOS, Android)

  • Connect Your Device: In the Emporia app, use the hotspot's WiFi details for setup. This can also help your device receive firmware updates (which can help connectivity to the local network).

Router Configuration Checks

Ensure your router's settings are compatible:

  • Security Protocol: Use WPA, WPA2, or WEP.

  • WiFi Protocol: Ensure it's set to B, G, or N modes.

  • Automatic Channel: Let your router manage its channel for optimal performance rather than having a predefined or preset channel number for new connections.

  • No Dual-Layer Security: Avoid networks requiring additional login steps beyond a WiFi password.

  • Firewalls and VPNs: Check for any settings that might block your device, especially in enterprise or advanced home networks.

  • Device Limits: Some routers limit the number of devices that can connect. Ensure yours doesn't, or adjust the settings.

For specific router questions, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Emporia Cloud Port and Target Domain information

Ports:

  • 80 (outbound)

  • 443 (outbound)

  • 8883 (inbound/outbound)

Target Domain(s):

  • mqtts://a2poo8btpqc3gs-ats.iot.us-east-2.amazonaws.com (deprecated)

  • mqtts://prod-mqtt.emporiaenergy.com/

Network Considerations

  • 2.4GHz Requirement: Emporia devices need a 2.4GHz network. They won't connect to 5.0GHz only networks.

  • Mesh and Multiple Access Points: These generally work well but can cause issues. Try connecting to a mobile hotspot to update your device's firmware as a workaround.

  • Shared 2.4GHz/5.0GHz Networks: If possible, set up a dedicated 2.4GHz network to avoid automatic reassignment to a 5.0GHz network.

Additional Ideas

SSID (network name) and Password

  • Special Characters: Avoid using special characters in your WiFi SSID (network name) and password.

  • Length: Keep your SSID and password within a reasonable length (ideally under 32 characters for the SSID and 63 characters for the password) to ensure compatibility.

Minimize WiFi Congestion

  • Channel Interference: Use a WiFi analyzer app to check for congested channels. Switch your WiFi channel through your router settings to a less crowded one, preferably channels 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz, as they don't overlap.

  • Device Placement: Keep your Emporia device away from metal objects and appliances that can cause electromagnetic interference, such as microwaves and cordless phones.

Enable Legacy Modes on Your Router

  • Compatibility Mode: Ensure your router's WiFi settings are configured to support legacy devices. This might include enabling options for "b/g/n" mixed mode rather than just "n" or "ac/ax" modes, ensuring broader compatibility.

Static IP Reservation

  • Avoid IP Conflicts: Assigning a static IP address to your device through your router settings can help prevent IP conflicts within your network, improving connectivity stability. Emporia devices do not have a preassigned IP address, but you can use the MAC address (last 12 digits of device serial) to identify the device through your router settings to assign an IP address.

Disable AP (or "Client") Isolation

  • Network Devices Communication: Ensure that AP (Access Point) Isolation or Client Isolation is turned off in your router settings. This feature, when enabled, prevents connected devices from communicating with each other, which could interfere with Emporia device functionality.

Resetting WiFi Through the Emporia App

If your device doesn't reconnect automatically or you need to change network settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Emporia Energy app.

  2. Tap the Menu (☰) icon in the top-left corner.

  3. Select Manage Devices from the menu.

  4. Choose your Vue device from the list.

  5. Scroll to the bottom of the device's details page.

  6. Look for the Reset WiFi / Solar Setup option.

If the reset option isn't visible:

  • Force-close and reopen the app.

  • Ensure you're physically near the device to complete the WiFi reset process.

  • Confirm you've selected the correct device within the app.

Note on App Functionality: The Emporia Energy app currently doesn't display the name of the WiFi network your Vue device is connected to. To determine or change the connected network, you'll need to perform a WiFi reset as described above and manually select your desired network during the setup process.
