Provision a device in ARC

Get a powered device online and onto your organization from a computer or Android phone.

Get a powered device online and onto your organization in one step, from Chrome on a Mac or Windows computer, or from an Android phone.

Provisioning connects a device to Wi-Fi and the Emporia cloud over Bluetooth, then adds it to your ARC organization. Sharing it with a customer is a separate step.

Before You Start

  • Use one of these:

    • Chrome on a Mac or Windows computer

    • An Android phone, in Chrome

  • iPhone and iPad browsers aren't supported.

  • Turn on Bluetooth on your computer or phone.

  • Stand next to the device. It must be powered on.

  • Have the Wi-Fi network name and password the device will use.

  • You need the Admin or Installer role.

Supported devices: Classic EV Charger, Pro EV Charger, Vue 3, Home Battery, and Utility Connect.

Note: Smart Plug can't be provisioned from a browser. Use the Emporia app.

Provision a Device

  1. In ARC, open Devices and select Provision a device. On a phone: tap Add a device, then Provision a device.

  2. Pick your device type.

  3. On Enable permissions, select Add Device. If it says "Bluetooth service is unavailable. Please enable it.", turn on Bluetooth and reload.

  4. Select Find devices. In the Chrome pop-up, pick the device whose name matches the ID on its label (it starts with PROV_), then select Pair.

  5. On Choose your WiFi network, pick the network. Select Refresh List if it isn't there.

  6. Enter the password and select Continue.

  7. Wait while ARC registers the device and waits for it to connect to the cloud.

  8. For chargers, Vue 3, and Utility Connect: on Set up device information, check the name and details, then select Save. For chargers: on Charger Settings, set Dedicated Breaker (Max Charge), select Save, then create a 4-digit PIN (or enter the charger's existing PIN) and select Save. For Vue 3: answer Does your system generate its own energy? and wait while ARC verifies the setup. Then wait while ARC checks for firmware updates. This can take up to 3 minutes.

  9. On Onboarding Complete!, select Done.

The device now shows in Devices.

Installers

Installers add devices to your organization and work on the devices they have access to. Two settings control this:

  • Installer role: set on the organization. Lets a member provision and add devices, and view your organization's info.

  • Installer access: set per device. Lets a member manage that device, including controls, schedules, settings, breaker size, and customer information. DERMS program enrollment and dispatch stay with Admins.

The Installer role alone doesn't let a member manage a device. Inviting an Installer doesn't give them access to devices already in your organization. Only Admins can invite members and grant or revoke device access.

When an Installer provisions a device, or adds one by serial number that isn't already in your organization, ARC adds it to the organization they're signed in to and gives them Installer access to it. This works for any device, not just inventory. The access stays until an Admin revokes it or the device is removed from your organization.

Each Installer needs their own email. An email can belong to only one ARC organization, so invite each crew member with their own address and don't share logins. If the email is already a member of another ARC organization, the invite fails.

Invite an Installer (Admins):

  1. Open the gear menu, then Organization > Members. On a phone: Menu > Organization > Members.

  2. Select Invite User.

  3. Enter their email and set Role to Installer. Use an email that isn't already a member of another ARC organization.

  4. Select Invite. They get an email with a temporary password.

Grant device access (Admins):

  • One device: open it from Devices, stay on Overview, and under Direct device access select Grant access. Pick Installer, tick the member, then select Grant 1 member.

  • Several devices: in Devices, tick the devices, open the ⋮ menu, then Manage access. Pick Grant access and Installer, tick members, then select Grant Installer access.

Only members with the Installer role are listed for Installer access.

Revoke access (Admins): select Revoke next to the member, then Revoke Installer access. Or use Manage access with Revoke access for several devices. Only that access is removed, right away. The member stays in your organization, and other access to the device stays the same.

Typical setup:

  1. An Admin invites each member with the Installer role.

  2. Installers sign in at arc.emporiaenergy.com and provision devices on site.

  3. Installers keep access to the devices they provision. The Admin grants access to any other devices they need, and revokes it when the job is done.

See Installer access in ARC for the full steps.

Troubleshooting

  • "This browser or device does not support Bluetooth provisioning." Open ARC in Chrome on a Mac, Windows, or Android device.

  • "Adding a device is not supported in a browser on iPhone or iPad." Switch to a computer or an Android phone.

  • "Bluetooth provisioning isn't available at this HTTP address." Open arc.emporiaenergy.com.

  • No devices found: check that the device is powered, you're close to it, and you picked the right device type, or you closed the Chrome pop-up. Select Try Again.

  • "Could not connect device.", "Invalid device.", or "Something went wrong communicating with device." Move closer and try again.

  • "Failure getting wifi networks." or "Failure connecting to wifi." Check the network name and password, then try again.

  • "Failed to get serial number. Device may have to be reset." Reset the device, then start again.

  • "Timed out waiting for connection." Check the network has internet access, then select Retry.

  • "EV Charger with Invite2Charge is not allowed": Invite2Charge chargers can't be added this way.

  • "Device was created by another partner. Associating to this device is not allowed.": contact support.

Still stuck? Open the gear menu, then Help & Support. On a phone: Menu > Help & support.
