Custom Notifications

Create custom alerts for energy thresholds and usage patterns.

Updated over a month ago

Custom Notifications allow you to set personalized alerts for specific energy usage thresholds and behaviors. These are available for all devices that provide measurement data, excluding Smart Plugs (custom notifications for Smart Plugs will be introduced in the future).

For a general overview of how notifications work and how to access the settings, refer to this article.

Setting Up a Custom Notification

Custom Notifications are configured within the Emporia Energy app. Below are the primary settings and options available:

Basic Notification Settings:

  • Name:
Assign a name to your notification. This name will appear in your notifications list.

  • Apply To:
Select the device or circuit this notification applies to.

    • Devices with a single measurement (e.g., EV Charger, Utility Connect) will default to "mains."

    • Devices with multiple sensors (e.g., Vue energy monitors) will show all available circuits for selection.

Usage Threshold Settings:

This defines the rules for triggering the notification based on energy usage.

  1. Exceeds / Less Than or Equal To:
Choose whether the notification triggers when usage surpasses a specific value ("Exceeds") or drops below or equals the value ("Less Than or Equal To").

  2. Amount:
Enter the energy threshold in kW (kilowatts). Note: Thresholds cannot be set using amps or voltage.

  3. Duration:
Specify how long the usage must stay above or below the threshold to trigger the notification. The entire duration must meet the threshold condition. For example:

    • A "1-minute" threshold means the usage must stay above/below the specified amount for the full minute.

    • If usage fluctuates within the duration, the notification will not trigger.

Once saved, the custom notification will appear in your notifications list.

Examples of Custom Notifications

Here are a few examples to guide you in setting up custom notifications:

  1. Notification for Any Usage ("Turned On"):

    • Device: Select the appropriate device/circuit.

    • Rule: Set to "Exceeds" 0.001 kW for 1 second.

  2. Notification for Prolonged Usage (e.g., Air Conditioner running for over 10 minutes):

    • Device: Select your Vue 3 (or Vue 2, 1) device and the "Air Conditioner" circuit.

    • Rule: Set to "Exceeds" 0.001 kW for 10 minutes.

  3. Notification for No Usage (e.g., Pump not running for over 2 hours):

    • Device: Select your Vue 3 (or Vue 2, 1) device and the "Pump" circuit.

    • Rule: Set to "Less Than or Equal To" 0.001 kW for 2 hours.
