EV Charger not charging at full rate
Updated over a week ago

The most common reason for an EV Charger not reaching the maximum charging rate, as set by the app, is due to limitations from the vehicle itself. Although the Emporia EV Charger is rated to provide up to 48A, the vehicle will request the amount it needs, and the charger will comply with the vehicle's request unless it exceeds the specified settings within the app.

If your vehicle is available and ready to charge at a higher amperage rate but still not reaching that amount - then these steps below can help troubleshoot where the restriction might exist.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

  1. Vehicle Limitations:

    • Reason: Many vehicles have their own limitations on the charging rate they can accept, which might be lower than what the charger can provide.

    • Action: Check your vehicle's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer to confirm the maximum charging rate your vehicle can accept.

  2. App Settings:

    • Ensure Real-Time Charge Rate:

      • Open the Emporia Energy app and navigate to the charge rate settings.

      • Ensure that the real-time charge rate is set as high as possible, within the safety limits of your electrical installation and vehicle capabilities.

    • Energy Management Features:

      • Verify that there are no energy management features active in the app that might be limiting the charge rate. These features could include scheduled charging, demand response programs, or power-sharing settings.

  3. Vehicle Settings:

    • Adjust Vehicle Charge Rate:

      • Check the settings within your vehicle to ensure they are set to allow the highest possible charge rate. This might involve navigating to your vehicle's charging settings menu and making adjustments.

  4. Environmental Factors:

    • Battery Temperature:

      • High battery temperatures can reduce the charging rate. Ensure the vehicle's battery is within an optimal temperature range for charging.

    • Battery Charge Level:

      • If the vehicle's battery is near full, it will automatically reduce the charging rate to protect the battery.

  5. Physical Installation Check:

    • Ensure the EV Charger is properly installed, and all electrical connections meet the recommended specifications.
