EV Charger not charging at full rate

Reasons for slow charging and steps to troubleshoot common causes.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If your electric vehicle isn't charging at the expected rate, this doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with your Emporia EV Charger. The charging rate varies depending on your vehicle, environmental conditions, and various settings. Here's how to troubleshoot: This guide will also help you understand how to track your energy usage effectively using tools like the Emporia app.

1. Check Vehicle Limitations

  • Verify your vehicle's maximum Level 2 AC charging rate

  • Note that some cars have different "home" versus "public" charging behaviors

  • Not sure what your EV chargers are at, check out Green Cars Compare and use the charging calculator to verify.

2. Review App Settings

  • Confirm that the real-time charge rate is set appropriately in the Emporia Energy app

  • Verify that no energy management features are limiting charging (scheduled charging, Peak Demand, Excess Solar, PowerSmart settings, utility demand programs)

  • Ensure maximum amperage matches your installation (40A for NEMA 14-50 outlet, 48A for hardwired)

  • Use the Emporia app to track energy usage and view charging history, helping to monitor and optimize performance.

3. Adjust Vehicle Settings

  • Check vehicle settings to allow maximum charge rate

  • Confirm if "home" and "public" charging rates differ in your vehicle's settings

  • Check for any AC charging limits in the vehicle's charging settings.

  • Please note that public DC fast chargers typically offer higher power rates compared to home-based AC chargers, as this depends on your vehicle's onboard system.

4. Consider Environmental Factors

  • Battery temperature affects charging rate (too hot/cold reduces rate)

  • Nearly complete batteries automatically charge more slowly to protect battery life

  • Test charging rate when the battery level is lower

5. Inspect Installation

  • Verify proper installation and electrical connections

6. Test Compatibility

  • Try another Level 2 AC charger with your vehicle

  • Test the Emporia EV Charger with another vehicle if possible

7. Track Energy Usage

Viewing Individual Charging Sessions

  • Navigate to the home screen in the Emporia app.

  • Steps: Tap on your EV Charger → Select History.

  • You'll see a calendar with daily energy usage figures. Switching to the Sessions view provides detailed metrics for individual charging sessions, helping you understand energy patterns.

Incorporating Charger Data with Vue Energy Monitor

  • If your EV charger shares an installation panel with a Vue Energy Monitor, the app aggregates that data into the total energy usage value.

  • To separate or nest your charger under the monitor for accurate reporting:

    • In the app: Home Screen → Tap EV Charger → Select Charger Settings → Open EV Charger Info → Proceed to Nest Under.

    • Choose your Energy Monitor changes and save.

These steps enable precise tracking of charger energy consumption, offering better insights into usage patterns.
