Can I adjust the amperage/charge rate?
Updated over 6 months ago

Yes, the amperage (or charge rate) of your Emporia Energy Level 2 EVSE EV Charger is adjustable. This flexibility allows you to optimize your charging experience according to your needs and the capabilities of your electric vehicle (EV) and electrical system. Adjustments can be made on-demand via the Emporia Energy app or automatically through our advanced energy management features. Amperage can be adjusted in single-amp increments between 6A (minimum) up to the set maximum (usually 40A-48A).

Methods of Adjustment:

  1. On-Demand via the Emporia Energy App:

    • You can manually adjust the charge rate through the Emporia Energy app at any time. This feature ensures that you have control over the charging process, allowing you to set the desired amperage based on your immediate requirements. More information about App Control for EV Chargers.

  2. Automated Energy Management:

    • The Emporia platform offers several energy management features that can automatically adjust the charge rate for optimal performance and efficiency. These features include:

      • Excess Solar Optimization: Adjusts the charge rate to make the most of your solar energy production.

      • Peak Demand Management: Modulates charging to avoid peak demand charges, helping you save on energy costs.

      • Load Management: Balances the load across your electrical system to prevent overload and ensure safe operation.

Limitations to Consider:

While the charge rate is adjustable, there are several factors that may limit the maximum rate at which your EV can charge:

  • Vehicle Limitations: Some EVs have a maximum charge rate that cannot be exceeded, regardless of the charger's capabilities.

  • System Limitations: Your home's electrical system may have specific limitations due to supply constraints, setup, wiring, or installation configurations.

  • Installation Limitations: If you are using the NEMA 14-50 plug installation option, the maximum charge rate is limited to 40A. For hardwired installations, the maximum charge rate can reach up to 48A.

Available Charge Rates:

  • Minimum Charge Rate: 6A

  • Maximum Charge Rate:

    • 48A (if hardwired)

    • 40A (if using the NEMA 14-50 plug)

These adjustable settings ensure that your Emporia Energy EV Charger can accommodate various scenarios and requirements, providing you with a tailored charging solution that meets both your immediate and long-term needs.
