The Vue is designed to be installed by anyone comfortable working in a residential electrical panel. A professional electrician is not required in most cases, but there are situations where professional installation is either legally required or simply the right call for your comfort level. This article covers when each approach makes sense.
DIY Installation
Most Vue customers install their own monitor. The installation process is straightforward β mount the gateway, connect the wire harness to available breakers, clip CT sensors around the main lines and any branch circuits you want to monitor, then complete Wi-Fi setup in the Emporia app.
You are a good candidate for DIY installation if you:
Are comfortable safely removing the dead-front cover of your electrical panel.
Can identify phase, neutral, and ground conductors in your panel.
Are comfortable installing a small single-pole or dual-pole breaker for the wire harness (or connecting to an existing breaker using pigtails).
Can follow a step-by-step installation guide and stop to ask questions when something doesn't match.
The full Vue Installation Guide is available at emporiaenergy.com/product-documentation and walks through the process step by step.
When Professional Installation Is Required or Recommended
Your local code requires it. Some jurisdictions require a licensed electrician for any work inside a service panel. Check your local building code or call your utility if you are unsure.
Your landlord, HOA, or insurance requires it. Rental properties, condos, and some homeowners' insurance policies require licensed work on service equipment. Confirm before you install.
You're not comfortable working in the panel. Working inside a live electrical panel is serious β there is no shame in hiring a professional. If the thought of removing the dead-front cover makes you pause, hire an electrician, or ask a friend or family member who is comfortable with this kind of work to help. Your Vue will work exactly the same way either way.
Your setup is unusual. Older panels, panels with bus bars instead of standard mains, split services, or commercial-adjacent residential panels may benefit from an electrician who can assess the setup in person.
If You Hire an Electrician
Your electrician does not need prior experience with Emporia products. The Vue is designed to be familiar to any licensed electrician β it uses standard CT sensors, a standard wire harness, and a single gateway mounted next to the panel.
To make the appointment smooth:
Print the Vue Installation Guide and give it to your electrician before the visit.
Decide in advance which branch circuits you want monitored. Most electricians will ask, and having a list ready saves time at the panel.
Plan to complete Wi-Fi setup yourself in the Emporia app after the electrician finishes. Setup is app-based and doesn't require electrical work.
