Why Emporia Exists
The U.S. electrical grid has operated the same way for 150 years. Power plants generate. Long transmission lines carry. Demand does whatever it does, and the grid scrambles to match it — by building more capacity. More plants. More infrastructure. An estimated $1 trillion in new construction is ahead for North America.
The problem: peak demand happens roughly 5% of the time. The other 95%, that capacity sits idle.
Emporia launched in 2018 in Littleton, Colorado, built around a different premise: managing demand from the home side. Founder Shawn McLaughlin spent 25 years in North American energy trading and saw an opportunity most of the industry missed: homeowners had almost no visibility into their own energy use and no real tools to act on it.
Our mission: revolutionize home energy, drive tangible savings for customers, and accelerate the transition to a lower-carbon future. The long-range goal is building the nation's largest virtual power plant — connecting millions of home batteries to balance the grid from the demand side for the first time in its history.

What We Do
The Vue Home Energy Monitor installs in your electrical panel and captures consumption at the circuit level, at one-second fidelity. Individual appliances. Individual circuits. Not just a monthly total.
That data feeds a platform that controls the largest loads in a home — our Level 2 EV Charger (one of the top-selling residential chargers in the country), Smart Plugs, Home Battery, and integrations with thermostats and major appliances. The platform automatically shifts usage away from expensive peak periods, optimized around your utility's rate schedule.
Customers typically save 10–20% through automated demand management alone. With a home battery, that rises to 30–50%.
Over 400,000 customers across the U.S. are on the platform today.
Our Values
Customers First. Real people answering questions. Products built to improve lives, not to impress spec sheets. This one sits above everything else.
Grit. A decade-long mission doesn't reward impatience. We're patient, persistent, and willing to do hard things.
Get 1% Better Every Day. Compound progress — every person, every product, every day.
Own the Outcomes. Everyone at Emporia is a partner, accountable for what they put into the work and what comes out of it.
Winning Together. The grid doesn't change because one person willed it to.
Where We're Located
Emporia is headquartered in Littleton, Colorado, with a second office in Boulder. Product design, engineering, testing, and strategy all run out of Colorado. Primary manufacturing happens in India, with components sourced from a network of global suppliers — a model that keeps quality high and prices accessible.
The Road Ahead
Energy costs are rising roughly 7% above inflation annually through the end of the decade. Most homeowners don't know where their money is going.
The virtual power plant changes that math at scale. Get 2 million home batteries connected to the platform, and Emporia can dispatch or absorb energy in any neighborhood in the country — stabilizing a grid without building a single new power plant. The Rocky Mountain Institute estimates this approach could cut the carbon intensity of the U.S. grid by 70%.
