Device Nesting

Device nesting is a feature available to help aggregate multiple monitors together that are monitoring the same/related usage.

Nesting is commonly used in the following scenarios:
1.) Multiple Gen 2/Gen 1 devices monitoring the same panel (for access to more than 16x branch circuit sensors/CT's)
2.) Multiple Gen 2/Gen 1 devices monitoring related panels, i.e. main and sub-panels (with devices monitoring each).
3.) Smart Plugs, EV Chargers downstream from Gen 2/Gen 1 sensors.
4.) Gen 2/Gen 1 devices monitoring branch circuit usage with a Utility Connect monitoring mains usage (via the connected smart meter).

Scenarios not covered with nesting:
1.) Split serviced panels (i.e. panels with separate feeder lines coming from utility meter/grid).
2.) Smart Plugs under Smart Plugs (i.e. one plug at the outlet, another at the appliance). Smart Plugs cannot have other devices nested underneath them at the moment (including other Smart Plugs).

What does Nesting do?

Nesting will inject the downstream ("under") devices into the circuit list of the parent device (or device nested under). That helps to organize the devices in a logical manner within the app, but they'll also share data together to prevent double counting.

Here is an example of two Gen 2's nested together (as a main/sub-panel relationship):


How to Nest devices together?

Once you have two (or more) devices up and running, you can nest them together in the app like this:

  1. Select Menu (☰) in top left corner

  2. Select the device you want to nest (will be downstream from the parent device)

  3. Select *device* Info (where *device* will be your device type, Vue for Gen 2/Gen 1)

  4. Use the drop-down labeled Nest Under to select the main device and select Save
