Device Nesting

Use device nesting to organize and monitor interconnected energy systems.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Device nesting is a feature that allows you to aggregate multiple Emporia monitors when they measure the same or related energy usage. This functionality ensures accurate reporting and helps prevent "double counting" of energy consumption by organizing devices logically within the app.

When to Use Device Nesting

Nesting is typically used in the following scenarios:

  1. Expanding circuit monitoring capacity

    • For example, using multiple Vue 3, Vue 2, or Vue 1 monitors to monitor the same electrical panel when more than 16 branch circuits need coverage.

  2. Monitoring main and sub-panels

    • Nest a sub-panel monitor under your main panel monitor for highlighted organization.

  3. Integrating downstream devices

    • Include devices like Smart Plugs or EV Chargers downstream from Vue monitors to consolidate data.

  4. Combining mains and branch circuit monitoring

    • Use a Utility Connect for mains monitoring alongside a Vue monitor tracking branch circuit usage.

Scenarios Where Nesting is Not Applicable

Nesting does not apply in these situations:

  1. Split-service panels

    • Panels with separate feeder lines from the utility meter cannot be combined under the same nesting setup.

  2. Smart Plug under Smart Plug

    • Nesting Smart Plugs within each other (e.g., one at the outlet and another at the appliance) is not supported.

What does Nesting do?

Nesting organizes downstream devices (devices nested "under" a parent) into the parent device's circuit list within the app. This grouping helps:

  • Logically organize your devices for easier management.

  • Share data between parent and nested devices to prevent double-counting energy usage.

Example Scenario:

Two Vue 3 devices are configured in a main/sub-panel relationship. The main panel Vue 3 serves as the parent device, and the sub-panel Vue 3 is nested under it. This setup ensures accurate tracking and reporting of energy usage across both panels.

How to Nest Devices

Follow these steps to nest your devices in the Emporia app:

  1. Open the Emporia app.

  2. Select the menu icon () in the top-left corner.

  3. Choose the device you want to nest (this will be the downstream device).

  4. Go to the Device Info section for your selected device.

  5. Use the Nest Under dropdown to select the parent device.

  6. Click Save to finalize the nesting configuration.

(will get you to the appropriate device selection screen for which device should be nested "under" the parent)

If the Smart Plug from the above list was selected to be nested, then the following will apply:
