Emporia Verified Utility Plans

Learn what Emporia Verified Utility Plans are, how to find yours in the app, and how to report a missing or inaccurate rate.

The Emporia Energy app relies on accurate utility rate data to give you a reliable picture of your energy costs. Emporia Verified Utility Plans are rate plans that our team has entered, reviewed, and actively maintains.

This article explains what makes a plan "Emporia Verified," how to tell if your utility is covered, and what to do if it isn't.

What Makes a Plan Emporia Verified?

Every Emporia Verified Utility Plan is built and maintained by our team using source materials published by the utility itself β€” tariff sheets, rate schedules, and public rate filings. We review and update each plan to reflect:

  • Base rates (cents per kWh)

  • Time-of-use periods and seasonal changes

  • Fixed monthly fees

  • Tier thresholds for tiered plans

Why It Matters

  • Accurate cost tracking. Your in-app energy cost reflects the real rate structure of your utility, not a generic estimate.

  • Growing coverage. We're actively expanding the list of Emporia Verified utilities across the U.S.

Emporia Verified Plans vs. NREL Plans

Until your utility is Emporia Verified, the app may use rate data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) database. NREL plans are a reliable starting point, but they may not reflect the most recent rate changes from every utility.

My Utility Isn't Listed (or My Rate Looks Wrong)

To report an inaccurate or missing rate, please follow these steps in the Emporia app:

  1. Tap the menu icon (☰) in the app.

  2. Tap Location & Utility Info.

  3. Tap Utility Rates.

  4. Select the device for which you are looking to have the rate updated or added.

  5. Check if a utility rate plan is already set for this device. If a rate plan is already set, the app will automatically open that Utility Plan details screen, where you will see the flag icon in the upper-right corner. If no rate plan is set, tap Browse other plans in your area, search for your utility provider, and choose the rate plan that most closely matches your bill to open its Utility Plan details screen.

  6. On the Utility Plan details screen, tap the flag icon in the upper-right corner.

  7. When the "Help us keep rates accurate" panel appears at the bottom, tap the black bar labeled Report Inaccurate Rate Flow.

  8. An in-app chat window will open; at the bottom of that chat, tap the small button labeled Report Inaccurate Rate to begin the flow.

Once you tap Report Inaccurate Rate in the chat, the app will prompt you for all the information needed to review and update your rate.
