Emporia Verified Utility Plans

Get more accurate energy costs in the Emporia app with rate plans built and maintained by Emporia

Updated this week

Emporia‑verified plans are a new way to make the cost views in your Emporia app more accurate. Instead of depending on external rate databases, Emporia now maintains its own set of utility rate plans that are researched, built, and verified by our team specifically for Emporia customers.

Why Emporia‑verified plans matter

Utility rates change often—new seasons, new time‑of‑use windows, new fees—and those changes can make app‑based cost estimates drift away from what you see on your bill. When Emporia relied on external rate databases, we sometimes had to wait for other teams to process updates before they could show up in your app.

Emporia‑verified plans fix this by giving Emporia full control over the rate data used in the app. Our team can update plans directly, focus on the ones Emporia customers use most, and better model complex rate structures so they line up with how your utility actually charges you.

How Emporia‑verified plans work

When you set up cost/rate settings for a location in the Emporia app, you can choose to link your account to a utility rate plan. With Emporia‑verified plans, you simply search for your utility, select your plan, and let Emporia handle the details.

Behind the scenes, each Emporia‑verified plan includes:

  • Prices for each time‑of‑use period or tier (where applicable), so different times of day or usage levels are priced correctly.

  • Any additional per‑kWh or recurring charges that the plan is designed to support, to bring estimates closer to how your utility calculates the bill.

  • A structure tuned to work with Emporia devices, so energy from your Emporia Vue, smart plugs, and Emporia EV Chargers is costed consistently in the app.

As your devices measure energy use, the app applies the rules in your Emporia‑verified plan, so you see costs over time instead of just raw kWh.

How Emporia keeps plans up to date

Emporia’s support and product teams keep a close eye on utility changes and customer feedback to keep Emporia‑verified plans current. Utilities publish updated tariffs through commissions and other filings, and Emporia uses that information to refresh the plans used in the app.

When a known utility rate changes, the typical flow is:

  • Emporia reviews the new tariff or documentation to confirm pricing, time windows, and any new fees.

  • The Emporia‑verified plan is updated in our internal rate database to match the new structure.

  • The updated plan is deployed so future usage is calculated using the new rules.

Because Emporia owns this workflow end‑to‑end, we don’t have to wait for external databases to process updates before your app can use them.

If your plan looks wrong or is missing

Sometimes utilities roll out changes quickly, or a specific niche plan may not yet be modeled as an Emporia‑verified plan. If your costs look off compared to your bill, or if you can’t find your exact rate, you can report an inaccurate or missing rate directly in the Emporia app so our team can review it.

To report an inaccurate or missing rate, please follow these steps in the Emporia app:

  • Tap the menu icon (☰) in the app.

  • Tap Location & Utility Info.

  • Tap Utility Rates.

  • Select the device for which you are looking to have the rate updated or added.

  • Check if a utility rate plan is already set for this device.

    • If a rate plan is already set, the app will automatically open the Utility Plan details screen, where you will see the flag icon on the right side of the screen.

    • If no rate plan is set, tap Browse other plans in your area, search for your utility provider, and choose the rate plan that most closely matches your bill to open its Utility Plan details screen.

  • On the Utility Plan details screen, tap the flag icon on the right side of the screen.

  • When the “Help us keep rates accurate” panel appears at the bottom, tap the black bar labeled Report Inaccurate Rate Flow.

  • An in‑app chat window will open; at the bottom of that chat, tap the small button labeled Report Inaccurate Rate to begin the flow.

  • Once you tap Report Inaccurate Rate in the chat, the app will prompt you for all the information needed to review and update your rate.

Feedback and suggestions

Emporia‑verified plans—and the experience around them—will continue to evolve as utilities change rates and customers share feedback. If you have ideas to make rate setup easier or more accurate, please reach out to our Customer Support team.
