Emporia Energy enables you to export data measured by all Emporia devices in CSV format so you can analyze usage outside the app and align it with your utility billing cycles. This article explains how to request CSV exports, understand the exported files, and compare your measurements with utility data.
Requesting a CSV export
CSV exports are on‑demand and customizable, letting you choose the timeframe and device you want to analyze, with results delivered by email to your Emporia account address. To verify the email used for exports, open the app, go to Menu (☰) > Account, and confirm the email displayed. If you do not receive the export email, confirm that the address is correct and check your spam or junk folder.
Export steps
Open the Emporia Energy app and tap the menu icon (☰).
Select Export Raw Data to CSV.
Choose the device for which you want to export data.
Specify the desired date range.
Tap Export Data to confirm your request.
Check your email inbox for a download link.
Use the link to download a .zip file that contains your exported data.
Understanding export files
Each downloaded .zip file includes multiple CSV files, each representing a different time resolution for the period you selected.
Available file types
1SEC: Up to 3 hours of data at 1‑second intervals.
1MIN: Up to 7 days of data at 1‑minute intervals.
15MIN: Complete 15‑minute interval data for the requested range.
1H: Complete hourly data.
1DAY: Complete daily data.
Data format by resolution
Seconds, minutes, and 15‑minute interval files: Provide power data in kilowatts (kW).
Hourly and daily resolution files: Provide energy data in kilowatt‑hours (kWh).
Understanding column labels
Column names that end with suffixes like _A, _B, and _C correspond to the device’s mains sensor ports. These typically represent data from the three 200A CT mains sensors on phases A, B, and C.
Comparing data with utility bills
Comparing Emporia CSV exports to your utility data helps validate that you are capturing total usage correctly and can highlight configuration or monitoring issues.
Step 1: Verify time zone alignment
Confirm that each device’s time zone matches the time zone used by your utility provider’s billing system so that date and time ranges line up.
Open the app, tap Menu (☰) → Location & Utility Info → Time Zone, and confirm or adjust the time zone for the relevant device.
When comparing to your bill, ensure the CSV data covers the exact start and end times shown in the billing period.
Step 2: Export and select the appropriate file
Follow the CSV export steps above to request and download your data.
After receiving the email, download the .zip file containing multiple CSV files in different resolutions.
For daily utility billing, use the 1DAY file to compare day‑by‑day totals.
For partial‑day or irregular cycles, use the 1H file (hourly data) to match the exact billing window.
Step 3: Process your data
Use Google Sheets, Excel, or another spreadsheet tool to analyze your CSV files.
Identify the mains sensor columns labeled with suffixes like _A, _B, _C
Create a Total Usage column by summing all mains columns for each row.
Sum the Total Usage column over the billing period that matches your utility bill.
Step 4: Compare results
Compare the total usage from your CSV data to the total reported by your utility provider for the same period.
Accuracy range: Your measurements should typically fall within ±2% of the utility-provided usage for the same period.
Discrepancies: If the difference exceeds 2%, it may indicate a configuration issue, missing data, or a monitoring error.
