Device scheduling allows you to control the on/off behavior and energy consumption of your connected devices based on specific times of day. Whether you want to take advantage of lower electricity rates during off-peak hours or need precise control over when devices operate, Emporia's scheduling features help you optimize energy usage and reduce costs.
Configure device schedules from the Discover section of the Emporia app.
Accessing Device Schedules
Setting Up Schedules:
Open the Emporia Energy app
Tap the Discover button at the bottom of the screen
Navigate to Device Schedules
Select the device you want to apply scheduling to
Choosing Your Scheduling Approach
Emporia offers two ways to schedule your devices:
Smart Saver:
Automatically operates devices during off-peak hours based on your utility rate plan to minimize costs
Set it once and let the app handle optimization
Best for most users who want simple, automated cost savings
Custom Schedules:
Manually set specific on/off times for complete control over when devices operate
Create multiple schedules for different days or situations
Best for users with specific timing needs beyond utility rate optimization
Most users benefit from Smart Saver's automated cost optimization, but custom schedules offer more flexibility if you have specific timing requirements.
Custom Schedule Management
Create custom schedules for precise control over your devices.
Creating a Custom Schedule:
From the Time-Of-Use page, select Control using Custom Schedules
Tap + Add Schedule to create a new event
Set the time for the event
Set the repeat cycle (default is daily)
Choose the action:
Charge State for EV Chargers
Switch for Smart Plugs
Tap Save
Important Note: Ensure each schedule has both "on" and "off" events if you want repeated or cycling behavior. A schedule with only an "on" event will turn the device on, but never turn it back off automatically.
Example Use Cases:
Run your pool pump only during daylight hours
Charge your EV between midnight and 6 AM when rates are lowest
Turn off decorative lighting automatically at bedtime
Operate energy-intensive appliances during specific time windows
Smart Saver
Smart Saver links your device to a utility rate plan, so it operates only during the lowest-cost periods (off-peak hours), helping you save money by automatically avoiding high-rate time periods.
How Smart Saver Works:
Analyzes your utility rate plan to identify off-peak hours
Automatically schedules device operation during the lowest-cost periods
Adjusts operation based on your rate plan's time-of-use structure
Provides seamless automation without manual schedule creation
Setting Up Utility Rates
Before using Smart Saver, you need to configure a utility rate plan for your device so the app knows when off-peak hours occur.
Configuring Your Utility Rate:
Tap the menu icon (☰) in the app
Navigate to Location & Utility Info
Tap Utility Rates
Select your device
Choose either:
Utility Rate Plan - Search for and select your utility provider from the list of Emporia Verified Plans
Manual Rate Entry - Enter your rate manually if your provider isn't listed or you have a custom plan
Tap Save
For detailed information about utility rate options, see the Location and Utility Information article.
Enabling Smart Saver
Once your utility rate is configured, you can enable Smart Saver.
Activating Smart Saver:
From the Device Schedules page, select your device
Toggle on Smart Saver
Your device will now automatically operate only during the lowest-cost periods defined by your rate plan
Default Behavior:
If you haven't set a utility rate plan yet, the app will display a prompt encouraging you to "Set my plan" to unlock the full benefits of Smart Saver, including accurate cost tracking and personalized savings recommendations.
If no rate plan is specified, the default hours are:
Weekdays: 8:00 PM–8:00 AM
Weekends: Always On
