At Emporia Energy, our cloud-based platform allows for advanced energy management by integrating multiple hardware devices. One such feature is PowerSmart, which dynamically adjusts your EV Charger’s charge rate based on real-time measurements from your Vue 3 (or Vue 2) energy monitor. This ensures safe operation within your electrical system's limits.
Offline Behavior and "Available Current"
Available Current is one of the most important safety related PowerSmart settings available. It describes the available amperage available within the service panel prior to installing the EV Charger - or the _limit_ of how much current would be allowed to run through the electrical system before tripping your electrical breakers. Details on how to set or adjust the Available Current setting can be found here.
Given that Emporia’s platform relies on cloud connectivity for monitoring and control, understanding the offline behavior of PowerSmart is crucial:
EV Charger Offline: If the EV Charger is offline or unable to communicate with the Emporia cloud, it will revert to a pre-set "Available Current" limit configured during the PowerSmart setup. This default setting ensures continued safe operation without dynamic adjustments.
Vue 3 Energy Monitor Offline: If the Vue 3 energy monitor goes offline, it stops sending real-time usage data to the cloud. Without these measurements, the Emporia system cannot adjust the EV Charger’s charge rate dynamically. In this scenario, the EV Charger will also revert to the "Available Current" setting.
Emporia Cloud Unavailable: In the event of a cloud service interruption, both the EV Charger and the Vue 3 energy monitor will function in their offline modes. The EV Charger will again default to the "Available Current" setting until the cloud service is restored and real-time control can resume.
Once connectivity is re-established, PowerSmart will automatically return to dynamic control, adjusting the EV Charger’s charge rate based on real-time electrical usage data from the energy monitor.
