Load Sharing allows multiple Emporia EV chargers on the same electrical circuit to work together, automatically adjusting charge rates to stay within your system's capacity. This guide walks you through the requirements and setup process.
Charger Requirements
At least 2 Emporia EV chargers – Cannot create a network with just 1 charger
All chargers must be online – Chargers need an active connection during setup
One network per charger – Each charger can only belong to one Load Sharing network at a time
Electrical Requirements
Network Max Amps must be less than 400A – System limitation for Load Sharing networks
Minimum 6A per charger – Network Max Amps must be at least 6A × number of chargers
Never exceed 80% of circuit capacity – When setting Network Max Amps, stay at or below 80% of your breaker or sub-panel rating
Example: For a 50A breaker, set Network Max Amps to 40A maximum (50A × 0.80 = 40A)
Understanding Network Max Amps
The Network Max Amps setting determines the total power available to all chargers in your Load Sharing network. Use these examples to calculate your minimum requirements:
2 chargers – Minimum 12A required (6A × 2)
3 chargers – Minimum 18A required (6A × 3)
4 chargers – Minimum 24A required (6A × 4)
Important: While these are minimum values, your Network Max Amps should be based on your actual electrical capacity at 80% of your breaker rating.
Setting Up Your Load Sharing Network
Quick Setup Checklist
Before creating your network, verify you have:
At least 2 chargers online in the app
Your electrical capacity information (breaker or sub-panel rating)
Calculated minimum Network Max Amps needed
Confirmed planned chargers are not already in other Load Sharing networks
Setup Steps
Open the Emporia Energy app
Tap Discover at the bottom of the app
Navigate to Load Sharing (available in app version 4.3.0 or later)
Create a new network and give it a descriptive name
Set Network Max Amps following the electrical requirements above
Add chargers to the network (chargers must be online to save)
Confirm that the chargers share the same electrical capacity when prompted
Save the network (requires a minimum of 2 chargers)
Troubleshooting Common Setup Errors
"Charger not available."
Cause – Charger is offline, or firmware needs updating
Solution – Ensure the charger is online and check for firmware updates
"Network Max Amps too low."
Cause – Not enough capacity for the number of chargers (minimum 6A per charger)
Solution – Increase Network Max Amps or reduce the number of chargers in the network
"Cannot save network."
Cause – Network has fewer than 2 chargers
Solution – Add at least 2 chargers before saving
"Charger already in network."
Cause – Charger is assigned to another Load Sharing network
Solution – Remove the charger from the existing network before adding it to new one
